Our sun has the scientific stellar classification G2V. The sun is in the spectral class G, meaning it is white to white-yellow and has a photospheric temperature of 5000 - 6000 degrees K. The 2 represents the temperature within the G class on a scale of 0 to 9, 0 being the hottest. V is the luminosity class and tells us that our Sun is a Main Sequence star, a typical dwarf star that generates its energy by nuclear fusion of hydrogen nuclei into helium. It is brighter than 85% of the other stars in our galaxy. High resolution G2V pictures can be found here: Astronomy Picture of the Day.
